Canadian skier Valérie Grenier will miss the World Cup season opener after injuring her knee during training on the race hill in Sölden, Austria.

Grenier announced the injury Monday on Instagram, saying she plans to return home Tuesday and undergo surgery Friday. She has not confirmed a specific diagnosis or a timeline for her return.

“Devastated to share this news, but two days ago during race hill training here in Sölden, I injured my knee,” Grenier wrote. “I’m flying home tomorrow, and I won’t know the full extent of the injury until I go in for surgery this Friday.”

A setback after a winning finish to last season

The injury comes after a season that saw Grenier return to the top of the World Cup podium. She won the giant slalom at the World Cup Finals in Hafjell, Norway, on March 25, her first World Cup victory in more than two years.

Earlier in the season, Grenier finished third in giant slalom at Tremblant, Quebec, on Dec. 6. It was her first World Cup podium on home snow and her first since January 2024.

Grenier has three World Cup victories and six podium finishes. All three wins have come in giant slalom, including consecutive victories in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, in 2023 and 2024.

Grenier awaits answers after knee injury

With her preparations for Sölden cut short, Grenier thanked supporters and wished her fellow racers well ahead of the opening weekend.

“To say I’m heartbroken is an understatement,” she wrote. “Thank you all so much for the incredible support, it means the world right now. Wishing all the racers the absolute best of luck this weekend!”

Grenier said she plans to share another update next week, once she knows more about the injury.

All of us at Ski Racing Media are devastated to hear this news. We wish Valérie a successful surgery and a smooth, speedy recovery.
